Licensing

All work of mine is subject to Creative Commons licensing. Specifically, Attribution licensing. This means if you use my stuff for anything, you have to tell people, clearly, where you got it. You can copy, distribute, transmit, or adapt my work.

But that’s pretty much it. You can’t claim it as yours.

Attribution I require is as follows:

  • Link to my site: http://stevehusted.com/artist
  • List my name: Steve Husted
  • List the name of the work, as specified on my website

Variations/modifications are available if you ask and I give you written permission. Email me for permission. steve AT stevehusted.com

You may wonder: won’t people just steal my high-res images and print their own instead of buying? Well, duh, of course they will. But then my work is hanging on their wall with proper attribution (and my signature is on all my works) and people will see it. That’s my biggest deal. I want people to see my work. I’m not naive. I’m not a dick. Well, yes I am, I’m just realistic and I understand that the value of art isn’t simply monetary.

By the way, FUCK THE RIAA. FUCK THE MPAA. Real artists don’t need those organizations. You make money from your stuff when it’s good and people want it. Why do you think Metallica got so interested in suing people when they started to suck? Because they weren’t selling shit because they SUCKED! Fuck you, Lars, you dorky bastard. Your dad was right in that documentary – your stuff sucked.

Anyway, I try to live my life according to principles of transparency and fairness and the open source ethic that I believe in. So here I am, open sourcing my stuff. Making it available to anyone. Go ahead, print it out on your color printer. Sell it. Share it. Just attribute it to me, that’s all I ask. I just wish more people understood what art was really about.

p.s. Fuck the RIAA, MPAA, and Lars!
