I celebrated too soon. Right after re-installation and update I got hard lockups again. It still lists my on-board soundcard which is positively disabled in the bios - but at least it doesn't insist on using it anymore... and I still can't get sound out of hydrogen. All this gets overshadowed by the constant lockups though... so 7.10 it is. Well now it seems to be in the right place again…

I left Ubuntu 8.04 since I couldn't get my audiophile to work with ubuntu 8.04 - there were a bunch of other issues, but this was pretty much the main one. Now just before I was going to install 7.10 again (after some major issues with Fedora 9 and PCLOS) - I thought I'd go see if someone has figured it out... will give 8.04 another try now.
