“Summers End,” 5″x7″, oil on canvasboard, NFS. September 7, 2009.
This is the first oil painting I think I’ve finished since 1991. Really. 18 years.
That’s a long time.
However, I did it. I want to do a painting a day, but may end up doing at least one per week, maybe 2 or 3. Depends on my schedule.
The title of the painting has several meanings. The actual subject is my friend’s daughter. She snapped the pic this is based on – it was one of the last days of summer, September, at the beach, in Maine.
The title does not have an apostrophe. That’s intentional. The painting means more to me. I haven’t finished an oil painting since the summer of 1991 when I joined the Navy. Summers end, and so do painting careers, if you let them.
I live in California and the heat is letting up. Summers end, but they just lead to new beginnings, as that little girl launching forth without abandon will discover for herself.
